COMPUTERS-ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-EXPERT SYSTEMS |
An expert system is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic the judgment and behavior of a human expert in a specific field. Expert systems are intended to supplement, not replace, human experts. They are often used to solve complex issues and provide decision-making capabilities.
Expert systems typically have five main components:
Knowledge base A structured repository of domain-specific knowledge, facts, rules, and heuristics that represents the expertise of human specialists
Inference engine Uses logical rules, or algorithms, to apply the knowledge from the knowledge base to answer queries or solve problems
User interface Allows users to interact with the knowledge base, which is usually a software platform
Explanation module Provides transparent reasoning and justification for the system's recommendations or outputs
Acquisition component The methodical process through which AI systems assimilate and integrate information to improve their problem-solving capabilities and understanding
Expert systems are usually focused on a single field or business sector, centralizing knowledge in that area for companies to use.
Typical tasks for expert systems include classification, diagnosis, monitoring, design |
