Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language. It is native to Punjab region of Indian Subcontinent, which includes Pakistani province of Punjab and Indian state of Punjab. It is the first language of about 113 million people in the world and is the 9th most spoken language in the world.
Punjabi, also spelled Panjabi, is an Indo-Aryan language that originated in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. It is spoken by over 130 million people worldwide, making it the tenth most commonly spoken language in the world. Punjabi is also a prominent language in South Asian communities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other Asian and African countries. In the UK, it is the second most commonly used language.
Punjabi is the official language of the Indian state of Punjab and is recognized by the Indian constitution. In Pakistan, it is the official language of the Punjab province and is spoken by over 30% of the country's population, making it the most commonly spoken language other than English and Urdu.
However, Urdu has official status at both the national and provincial levels in Pakistan. Punjabi has a rich history, incorporating loanwords from Persian and Arabic during Mughal rule in India and originating from Sanskrit. It is also the liturgical language of the Sikh religion, which originated in the Punjab region in the 15th century.
Punjabi is distinct from other Indo-Aryan languages in a few ways, including its subject-object-verb (SOV) word order and the fact that only the second verb carries t ense and agreement in SVC1, while all verbs show agreement and tense markings in SVC2. Eastern Punjabi has borrowed many words from Hindi and English, while Western Punjabi (Lahnda) has loanwords from Persian, Arabic, and Urdu. |
