MARATHI

Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language and the official language of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is also an additional official language in Goa, where it can be used in response to requests received in Marathi. Marathi is the third most spoken language in India by the number of native speakers, after Hindi and Telugu, and is spoken by around 84 million people. It is also the 15th most spoken language in the world.

Marathi has been influenced by the Dravidian languages of south India, particularly Kannada and Telugu, and has some Dravidian elements. It differs from English in several linguistic ways, such as word order and grammatical structure. For example, Marathi has a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order pattern, while English has a subject-verb-object (SVO) pattern. Marathi also has a hybrid ergative and nominative type of phonology, morphology, and syntax, with a dual agreement pattern and a pronominal system that cues agreement to both cases.

Marathi has some of the oldest literature of any modern Indo-European, Indic language, dating back to around 1000 AD. The language spread to other regions through writings and poems by Hindu saints about sacred Hindu texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita. During the Sultanate era (1206-1526 C.E.), Marathi was also used for business and was influenced by Persian, with many words in Marathi having Persian roots.

The major dialects of Marathi are Standard Marathi and Warhadi Marathi, with other sub-dialects including Ahirani, Dangi, Vadvali, Samavedi, Khandeshi, and Malwani.
