Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language that is native to the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the official language of Gujarat, as well as the states of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Union of India. Gujarati is also spoken in Pakistan, Africa, Fiji, the Middle East, Europe, the U.S., and Sri Lanka, with significant diaspora communities in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Gujarati has its roots in Sanskrit and is influenced by Persian and Arabic, and is linguistically distinct from Hindi. Gujarati has a phonetic script, with each sound represented by a single symbol, and the letters are adapted from Sanskrit with some modifications. For example, the top line of each letter is removed, and the conjugations of verbs are less complex than in English, Sanskrit, and Arabic.
